TODAY newspaper

The TODAY newspaper is MediaCorp's official foray into newspaper publishing.

First launched on November 10, 2000, TODAY is a commuter paper that is distributed free in Singapore from Mondays to Saturdays. Its Saturday edition is known as Weekend TODAY.

About the paper

The tabloid-sized paper places a heavy emphasis on local news, news analysis and commentaries. It also covers international and business news and has a lifestyle section with entertainment, health and investment pages.

TODAY received an readership of 550,000 in 2006 with more than have its readers falling under the demographic group of professionals, managers, executives and business people (PMEBs, according to MediaCorp Press. The paper is distributed to selected homes and is available at bus interchanges, Mass Rapid Transport (MRT) stations as well as selected public locations in the morning and at noon. Weekend TODAY is distributed to 150,000 homes and is available as the usual distribution points.

While the paper is largely regarded to be different from The Straits Times, the paper still has governemental links. Its parent company and national broadcaster, MediaCorp Pte. Ltd, though privatised, is 100% governement-owned.

Editorial Structure and Management

The paper's current editorial director is Mr P N Balji.

The company announced on 31 October, 2006 that its former editor-in-chief, Mr Mano Sabnani resigned from the company. Mr Balji, who was the man behind the launch of TODAY in 2001 rejoined MediaCorp Press as its Editorial Director.

He was formerly MediaCorp Press' chief executive when he first joined the paper in 2000. Mr Sabnani later took over Mr Balji in July 2003. According to newspaper reports, Mr Sabnani and Mr Balji both worked previously for Singapore's dominant newspaper group, Singapore Press Holdings and last held editorial positions at the The Straits Times and The New Paper respectively.

Mr Balji is currently assisted by Mr Walter Fernandez, who is the first Managing Editor of TODAY. He was formerly from Channel News-Asia's, MediaCorp's broadcast news arm, International desk. The role of managing editor is a newly-created position that was created on 31 October, 2006. The paper's Associate/Night Editor is Mr Rahul Pathak,

The change came about when MediaCorp announced a consolidation of its news gathering departments, both broadcast and print media which will come under a 'newsplex' at its new headquarters in Bukit Batok in 2011. The company also said it wants drive up the paper's editorial standards through training and recruitment and to establish a better electronic presence.

Mr Murali Subramaniam who was formerly TODAY's Associate/Day Editor will leave the newspaper arm to take up appointment as VP (Editorial Operations) to assist in the integration efforts from Jan 1, 2007. MediaCorp Group's Deputy Chief Executive Officer Shaun Seow will head a committee to chart the road map for this integration.
